Food groups are an important part of our everyday diet. We use food groups to label food into the types of group that they belong to. There are 5 different types of food groups. This includes grains, fruits and vegetables, dairy, meat and protein and oils, fats and sweets.

Grains

This is the food group that we should eat most often. This food group include healthy foods like cereals, pasta and rice. This food group gives us 'carbohydrates' which gives us energy to use and move about during the day. We should be eating approximately 6 servings a day.
A serving of bread is one slice.
A serving of cereal is 1/2 cup.
A serving of rice is 1/2 cup.
A serving of pasta is 1/2 cup.

Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables give us important 'fibre', 'vitamins' and 'minerals' everyday. We should be eating at least 2 servings of fruit and 5 servings of vegetables everyday.
A serving of vegetables is 75 grams.

Dairy

Dairy is the best source of 'calcium' in our diet to make our bones strong and healthy. This food group includes; milk, cheese and yoghurt. We should eat 2 to 4 servings from the dairy food group every day.
A serving of milk is 1 cup.
A serving of cheese is 40 grams.
A serving of yoghurt is 225 grams.

Meat and Protein

We should eat 2 to 3 servings of meat and proteins everyday. This food group includes fish, meat, dry beans, eggs and nuts. This provides us proteins, iron and zinc in our diet.

Oils, fats and sweets

Fats, oils and sweets provide hardly any nutritional values at all in our diet. So we should eat very little from this food group.
There is no daily serving size for this food group because we should be eating little of the foods in this group. This is not a healthy food group, but always eat in moderation.
